A Nightmare on Elm Street director Chuck Russell believes Jim Carrey could play Freddy Krueger, praising his versatility and saying he’d only consider it if the project offered a bold, evolved vision for the franchise.

Russell, who directed the 1987 classic Dream Warriors, said Carrey has the emotional range and physicality to reinvent the horror icon, provided the story takes creative risks like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare did.

The filmmaker noted that while Robert Englund remains the definitive Freddy, a new approach could rejuvenate the series for modern audiences without diminishing Englund’s legacy.

Englund, now 76, has officially retired from the role due to health and physical limitations, saying he can no longer perform the demanding fight scenes that defined his portrayal.

Englund told Variety he would love to make a cameo in a future Elm Street installment and personally suggested Kevin Bacon as a potential successor, calling him a talented and genre-respectful actor.

Russell also revealed he’d be open to revisiting Elm Street if there was strong creative and studio backing, and added that Patricia Arquette expressed interest in reprising her role as Kristen Parker from Dream Warriors.
